Notes: Sadik Yanik crafted his first meer in 1978 under the tutelage of his father Huseyin. He was 13 at the time. Today, he is among the most celebrated carvers in the old Viennese tradition, though he will occasionally implement a more modern idea. He makes about 250 pipes a year, and connoisseurs say that his work continues to grow in intricacy.

Yanik employs a secret method to pre-colour the beeswax on many of his pipes. In the past, there have been complaints of sub-standard drilling, but Yanik is reported to have improved his technique in this field.

Comments: As with almost all meerschaums, do not expect a particularly comfortable bit. With a long pipe, such as the one shown here, this does not really matter, since you will be holding it by the stem anyway. There is a rather appropriate 'hookah feel' to this.

Aesthetically and technically, Yanik is one of the rare makers to succeed in a genre that can easily deteriorate into kitsch unless executed to perfection. If your collection is to include a single carved meer, Yanik would be a good choice - possibly the best.
