Notes: Poul Winslow entered the pipe business in 1969, learning the trade from Preben Holm, whose chief employee he later became. In 1985, he founded his own brand and now employs helpers of his own to make about 3000 pipes a year. He also produces the inexpensive Crown line of semi-freehand pipes, often with astoundingly good grain. Many collectors perceive Winslow's output as rather commercialized, and he is generally not thought of as a true high-grader, though his more expensive pieces meet most of the requirements. His current style is generous and 'big', but there have been major changes over the years. The pipe shown on this page is very untypical and was carved on the premises in a Danish retail shop. However, it shows its maker's versatility. Grades for Crowns are 'Viking', 200, 300 and 'Collectors'. Curiously, the grain is often better than on Winslow E and D grade pipes. Pipes stamped as Winslows are graded from A to E in descending order of quality, with PC as the grade for very special pieces. Additionally, there is a Winslow Classic line for less adventurous shapes. Comments: Lower grades (and particularly Crowns) are excellent value for money, if the search is for a reliable smoker. More expensive Winslows do not retain their value well on the estate market. The bits could be more comfortable, in my opinion. |
