Notes: Steve Weiner started making pipes around 1990, and was carving about 200 - 250 pieces a year by the time of his early death in 2002. He was influenced by Italian brands (his rusticated pipes are sometimes favourably compared with Castellos) and was a lover of subtle variations on classical shapes.

Despite a well-established reputation as one of America's best, his technique continued to develop to the end. Just shortly before his death, Weiner introduced completely hand-cut stems, signalling a realistic ambition to join the international high-grade elite.

Comments: Larry Roush contributes the following memories for Pfeifenbox: "Steve was a good friend whom I miss and think of often. He and I started about the same time and both studied under Mike Butera. As we both were coming up the ladder about the same time, it was refreshing to have someone to discuss new techniques and ideas with. It was always great to see Steve at the shows. I believe he was among the new American pipe makers at that time to really set the stage for the American-made pipe scene."
