Notes: Luigi Viprati's pipes were hugely popular in the USA around the year 2000, but since seem to have lost their star status.

Grading is by clover leaves stamped on the shank, from one to five in ascending order. There is no Grade 3 (the number is considered unlucky by some Italians). Top pipes are marked as 'Fiammatas'. Addtionally, Viprati sometimes produces exclusive ranges with series names of their own. Rusticated pipes are ungraded.

Comments: My problem with standard Viprati pipes is the impression that they are almost all made in a hurry - including the higher grades (4 and 5 clover leaves). The reasonably priced rusticated pipes are fantastic value for money, whereas some more expensive pieces lack grace (though not flamboyance). Yet, Luigi Viprati is also able to carve pipes of rare beauty and with a unique shine to them. Really pricey Vipratis are almost invariably of this breed.

Some collectors take issue with small imperfections they notice, implying that the brand has suffered a loss of quality. My own guess is that many of these critics have progressed in experience and knowledge since the days of the Viprati hype - and are now comparing these pipes with Danish pieces commanding much higher prices.
