Notes: Founded in 1948 by Poul Nielsen, the factory-brand Stanwell has done more to boost Danish pipe culture than any of the great artisans. Many of these have worked for the firm at some time or another, designing shapes or overseeing production. The list of names - from Sixten Ivarsson to Tom Eltang - reads like a 'Who's Who?' of the Scandinavian pipe trade. Stanwell now belongs to the Rothman's group and produces some 115,000 pipes a year. Widely regarded as the world's best affordable factory make, Stanwell's main attraction in the 1960s and 1970s was the fact that it provided smokers with pipes made in the new Danish style at a fraction of the price charged by famous individual carvers. Today, the company remains renowned for pipes that smoke almost as well as many high-grades and often boast excellent grain. Comments: The pipe shown here is an old hand-made Stanwell from the 'Selected Grain' line, probably made in the late 1970s. It has an ebonite stem and is the only Stanwell left in my collection at the time of writing. I would not be averse to owning more, though I am not particularly fond of the acrylic bits on newer pipes. |
