Notes: Luigi Radice's workshop makes about 1800 pipes a year, many of which go to the US. The brand is known for several features, ranging from performance-oriented techniques to a famous design gimmick - the 'faux bamboo' shank, which bears striking resemblance to real bamboo. In recent years, oil cured bowls and twin bore stems have been introduced to improve smoking properties. The pipe shown here boasts both of these innovations - smokers are divided as to the advantages, but few contend that any negative influence can be discerned.

Comments: This brand is held in very high regard in the US. Judged by that market alone, it might be classed in the 'Elevated' tier. However, European collectors appear more indifferent - not critical, just unconcerned. Of course, this can easily be due to marketing focus. In my own opinion, Radices are a cut above some other Italian mid-grades, though not quite in the same league as Le Nuvole or Cavicchi.

Smoking properties appear excellent. A thinner bit would be a boon, but overall workmanship is impressive. Higher grade pieces often boast very imaginative, well balanced shapes.
