Notes: Despite what some people say, it's important to stress that Parkers are not Dunhills. True, the brand was founded by Dunhill in 1923 to deal with bowls rejected by the White Spot makers themselves. But very soon, it became plain that this could not remain the only source of raw material for the Parker factory. It is safe to say that most Parkers of any period were born with the name they were to be stamped with - though there are certainly some that began life as Dunhills. Incidentally, there is no fixed point in a pipe's creation for it to fail some test and be packed off to the Parker factory. It can happen at any time, very early on - or just before stamping. True connoisseurs therefore view Parkers as a separate and very respectable English brand in the affordable to mid-price bracket. After some lackluster years, Parkers are reported to have undergone a quality boost from around 2000. The top grades remain Super Briar and Super Briar Bark for smooth and sandblasted pipes respectively. Associated names are Hardcastle and Masta - neither are considered quite on a par with Parkers. Comments: Now that they are back in form, Parker pipes are once more among the best deals from England. Almost always good smokers, they constitute an excellent choice for new smokers assembling an initial rotation. |
