Notes: Peder Christian Jeppesen spent many years carving for Nording, before taking over the former Jensen workshop near Copenhagen, where he now produces pipes under his own brand name Neerup. He remains loyal to the Nording philosophy of offering a seamless portfolio, from affordable to elevated quality. However, the bulk of his work appears to be in the mid-grade range.

The German Internet newsgroup DAFT has chosen Jeppesen to carve its Pipe of the Year 2004.

Comments: An interesting, almost nostalgia-inspiring addition to Denmark's carving scene - a maker addressing a market segment nowadays dominated by Italians: quality pipes for budget-conscious smokers.

The piece shown here seems fairly typical of his proficient, but rarely ambitious style. The stunning bird's eye grain would have tempted many of Jeppesen's more pricey compatriots to carve a Blowfish variant. But despite settling for a less spectacular shape, he has managed to make a pipe that catches the eye easily.

There are one or two issues, including a very slight lack of symmetry at the end of the shank. All in all, however, it's a lot of pipe for a very modest sum. The pre-molded acrylic stem is surprisingly comfortable, and the balance is excellent, despite considerable overall weight. The skilled and tasteful use of contrast stain is also worth noting.
