Notes: Werner Mummert has been carving pipes since 1987. A part-timer, his most appreciative audience is in North America - a market he has been cultivating for several years. For the benefit of his customers there, he also makes knives and pistol grips.

Mummert does not appear to have a definite style of his own, but he is not totally eclectic, either. Rather, he comes in several distinct modes. There are conventionally fashioned pipes like the one shown on this page, gently artistic pieces such as his famous Goldfish shape, and avantgardistic experiments with unusual geometry and carving.

Elevated status for this maker is mostly based on the high regard he enjoys among some American collectors. To my eye, he does not always seem to realise when a bold idea lacks grace. However, when he is on firmer territory, he can carve an elegant pipe. Certainly, there is a lot of simple - and quite innovative - beauty to his Goldfish line.
