Notes: A truly amazing outfit: Former Charatan workers Dennis and John Marshall (father and son) sell their pipes at St. James Market in Piccadilly, London. The briars occupy a small part of their stall, the rest of which is devoted to tourist gimmicks.

Elsewhere, Millvilles are rather hard to find, though one or two British online stores sometimes stock them.

The pipes are made from a stock of very old briar, as John stresses. There are several grades, from pre-turned bowls to freehands in the old Charatan style. Millvilles have gained the respect of just about everyone who has smoked one.

Comments: Best value for money in Britain - very decent mid-grades at basket prices. The more exclusive and extravagant pipes aren't my cup of tea, but a simpler Unique (entirely hand-made) can be bought for the price of a cheapish Stanwell.
