Notes: Leslie John Wood did much of the silver work for Dunhill before founding his own brand with his wife Dolly. Almost all of his pipes feature rings or spigot stems. He makes about 2000 pieces a year, sold as 'Ferndowns' in the UK and US, but as 'L. Wood' pipes in Germany.

Grading is by finish (Bark, Chestnut, Root) and by size (one to three stars).

Comments: Impeccable craftsmanship extends to good stem/bit work, though these pipes are often quite heavy. Many people seem to rate Ashton higher, but I have found Ferndowns to be the better-made briars.
