Notes: Born in 1928, Gert Holbek entered the pipe scene working for Poul Rasmussen in 1953. A year later, he opened his own workshop, making about 200 pipes per year and selling them via the Pibe Dan shop. He is best known in Japan, and has also worked profusely as an industrial designer. Though his career as a full-time carver is over, he is finally reaping increased attention in Europe and the US, too.

Comments: Holbek's pipes are slim, elegant and often rather tall. They almost always display a walnut finish and rarely, perhaps never, sport any kind of decoration. The style is invariably reminiscent of the 1960s, which may explain the upsurge of recognition in recent years. Craftsmanship is superlative, and shaping wonderfully grain-sensitive. Collectors of Danish pipes should not miss an opportunity to purchase a Holbek - though the chances are becoming increasingly rare.
