Notes: The first German to 'go Danish', he trained with yesterday's legends and worked with today's. Garbe is less well-known than Chonowitsch or Ivarsson, but often classed in their tier by those 'in the know'.

Stylistically, his trademark is a slight overpronunciation of the bowl in the otherwise classical shapes he prefers.

Comments: Garbe's superlative reputation is largely based on 'engineering'. While I greatly appreciate the pipe shown here, I am convinced that equally meticulous makers like Poul Ilsted deserve to be treated as his peers. Among the Germans, I prefer Barbi and Mänz for their more spirited approach to carving.
