Notes: Eltang is a true star among Danish makers, with a lot of influence on younger carvers in the USA, too. He spent years as Stanwell's chief designer and is still associated with the firm. Apart from carving, he also sells briar to other makers. His best-known finish - a sprinkling of light and dark stain known as 'Golden Contrast' - was actually invented by Björn Bengtsson, though Eltang has developed his own version.

Comments: Unobtrusive shapes and a first-class eye for detail characterise his work. Eltang has survived a certain degree of high-level hype in recent years - his prices have risen somewhat, but the wave of criticism, which often follows inflationary praise, didn't occur.

Still in his mid-forties, Eltang is one of the youngest Danish makers and can probably look forward to further elevation of his status when others retire.
