Notes: Many legends, myths and true stories cling to the name Dunhill. Since all but very new pipe smokers will have formed their own opinions about the desirability of the White Spot, I shall not repeat any of them here.

Pipes are graded by size (1- 6) and finish: Shell, Cumberland, Dress, Bruyere, Chestnut, Amber Root, Root Briar (in ascending order, but there have been others). Pipes made after 1960 have a number after the 'Made in England' stamp. Add this to 1960 to calculate the year of production.

Estate prices of standard Dunhills are comparatively reasonable. Collectibility is a sophisticated issue. Some aficionados insist that earlier Dunhills (pre-1960) smoke better. Others give different dates. Certain models are worth a fortune - sometimes for no reason apparent to the non-specialist.

More comprehensive information on Dunhill nomenclature is available here: www.pipes.org/Articles/Dunhill/ID.html. Those able to read German will find even more on Wolfgang Pointner's site: www.pipewolf.com

Comments: You can make a better and more expensive car than a Rolls Royce, but you would be foolhardy to attempt one in the Rolls style. Like Rolls Royce, Dunhill not only occupies a niche, but fills it.

In years gone by, some people preferred Charatans. Today, others see Upshall as the premier English brand. These 'dissenters' have very sound reasons for their opinions - which have never seriously threatened Dunhill's supremacy.
