Notes: Mass-produced pop art pipes have earned Chacom a reputation for 'trashiness' among many briar lovers, but some of their better pieces still show the simplicity and functionality that once promised very decent smoking pipes. Jeantet, the oldest of the firms belonging to the Cutty Fort group dominated by Chacom, was founded in 1775. The group is based in St. Claude, the heart of pipedom in France, and produces almost 200,000 pipes per year. Bowls and finished pipes are also made for other labels. Top grade Chacoms are stamped as 'Grand Crus'. Comments: Most older pipe books hold Chacom in fairly high esteem. The piece shown on this page bears witness to the brand's erstwhile excellence. It is with a degree of sadness that purists consider many of today's models - but these must obviously sell very well and thus serve a purpose securing the income of some 45 employees. |
