Notes: Kirk Bosi has been making pipes since 1999, going commercial in late 2000. Of Italian descent, he lives in Chicago and has established a very good reputation for repairs, as well as carving. Many American smokers turn to him for stem replacements and re-drilling. For grading information, see the maker's own website. Comments: Priced towards the lower end of the mid-grade spectrum, Kirk's pipes are renowned for excellent smoking properties and a decent finish. Judging by the piece shown, I can confirm this reputation on both counts. From the very first bowl, this pipe required no smoking effort whatsoever. In this respect and in ergonomic terms (a thin, very comfortable bit), it is the peer of many pipes commanding far higher prices. On the downside, some shapes could be more elegant and symmetry further refined. Overall, however, this brand appears to afford great value for money - and if your emphasis is on high-performance 'smoking pipes', rather than artistry, Kirk's pipes are well worth a try. |
