Notes: Kurt Balleby appears to be a rising star of the Danish scene. Though he has been in the business since 1983, learning the trade from Kai Nielsen, his reputation has grown swiftly over the past four or five years (especially in the USA). Most experts see a marked rise in quality as the reason for this. Balleby makes 200 to 250 pipes a year, some hand-turned and some in the freehand style. His older pipes can sometimes still be found in shops and are generally cheaper than his more recent work - but less desired by collectors. Comments: I more or less agree with the changes in perception of Balleby pipes. It is sometimes hard to believe that older and recent pieces are by the same carver. Though smokers who now praise him as the equal of Bang may be exaggerating, he displays a fastidious approach to detail and finish, and is definitely one of the best Danish makers. Bit work on his newer pipes is superb. |
